Angelina Jolie Convinces Mariane Pearl To Drop Jennifer Aniston
Mariane Pearl sat in the back of the candle-lit restaurant in West Los Angeles. She had walked in and was immediately ushered to a hidden table for six around a tiled partition, clearly set up for private meals and meetings. She though was sitting at the table for fifteen minutes, all alone, sipping a green tea and wondering if this was going to be one of those typical Hollywood meetings where the movie stars are late and everyone waits, sitting on their hands, having small talk simply to fill the dead space until the stars arrive. Mariane, though, had no one to try out small talk with. Alone, is what she was, very much alone since her husband, Daniel Pearl, was brutally kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan. She had written her book, A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl to keep herself busy, to diminish the feeling of loneliness, an attempt to bring back Danny if just in her mind as she reconstructed her husband’s life.
Mariane was surprised when the book was immediately picked up and it sold well. She immediately became a minor celebrity, calls from agents about appearances, speeches, fund-raising events and of course movie deals. It was the call from Jennifer Aniston, a direct call, a personal call, with Jennifer on the other line, calling Mariane on Mariane’s cell phone, that was the biggest surprise. Jennifer read the book and wanted to buy the movie rights. They met on several occasions, Jennifer Aniston and Mariane Pearl, at restaurants, at Jennifer’s house, at Mariane’s house, at business offices, and all along Jennifer was very upfront about why she was interested. Jennifer Aniston wanted to play the role of Mariane Pearl in the movie based on her book.
Mariane was of course flattered. Jennifer Aniston playing her. The thought was both amusing and at times difficult to wrap her arms around. Not that Jennifer Ansiton couldn’t do it. It was just that anyone playing Mariane, particularly someone so beautiful and charismatic and famous as Jennifer Aniston, was difficult to fathom. Someone other than you playing you was like looking in a mirror and seeing someone else. Or was it like watching yourself, an act of narcissim that Mariane did not wish to grapple with. Afterall, this happened all the time. So she had decided to let it happen. Jennifer Aniston would be Mariane Pearl. At least in a movie.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie walked around the partition, both dressed very casually, hidden by sunglasses and scarves. Mariane was surprised to see Angelina Jolie. Mariane thought that she was simply meeting Brad Pitt.
“Sorry we’re late,” said Brad.
“It’s OK,” said Mariane.
A waiter arrived.
“Just a cappucinno for me in a paper cup,” said Brad.
The waiter looked at Angelina, who shook her head in silence.
“This is Angelina. Angelina this is Mariane Pearl,” said Brad.
“Hi,” said Angelina.
“Hi,” said Mariane.
“I have some very exciting news, Mariane,” said Brad.
“Yes?” said Mariane.
“We are proceeding with the movie. Michael Winterbottom is directing. I’m producing. We are starting right away with development,” said Brad.
“Great,” said Mariane.
“A minor change. Well, actually a big change, one that helps the film enormously. Angelina is going to play you,” said Brad.
“Angelina? But I thought…” said Mariane.
“Jennifer is no longer involved. But that is OK. It is all good,” said Brad.
“But I was just talking to Jennifer, I don’t know, maybe three weeks ago. She was doing some research,” said Mariane.
“Brad, I said it would be better if…” said Angelina.
“No. It is important that you are here. Mariane, this is a crazy business. Things never proceed as originally planned. Usually things fall apart. But you are lucky. You are very lucky. Rather than fall apart, your book, Danny’s life and your life will all come together in a movie starring an actor with even better credentials. It is all good, and I promise you this will move forward and be a major motion picture,” said Brad.
“I don’t know. I feel funny about this. I feel bad,” said Mariane.
“Yes, but frankly, Mariane, you really don’t have a say in casting,” said Brad.
“Oh shut up Brad, of course she has a say,” said Angelina with a slight smile on her face. “Mariane, I have read your book several times, and it has become very important to me to become a part of this project. As you no doubt know, I have dedicated much of my life to traveling the world and to purposely involving myself in causes for the underprivileged, the poor, the sick. I have used my celebrity as best I can to help others, rather than squander it on a Hollywood lifestyle. And to me, the fact that you and Danny did not have the resources at your disposal as I do, you nevertheless still dedicated your lives to others. That astounds me, that you and Danny would give so much of yourselves when you did not have much in the way of money or wealth or command of the media. I sit here in awe of you and of your late husband, and I would consider it a privilege, indeed an honor, to play the role of your life. In fact, I hunger to do so because it is a story that must be told,” said Angelina.
Mariane was not stupid. She felt she was being played, and Angelina was playing her like a deck of cards. But quite frankly, Angelina seemed sincere. Now of course she might be simply acting. Afterall, she is an actress. But the energy between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt disturbed the air around the table with a narcotic that almost made Mariane giddy. Maybe Mariane was being played, but she felt high from it all.
“I am very flattered that you would say all that. But I still feel uncomfortable about the Jennifer thing,” said Mariane.
“Of course you do. Anyone would. But you know the things that have happened. Jennifer no longer has any interest in the production company, Brad’s Plan B production company, that purchased the rights to your book, and to put it bluntly, and I think you know this all too well, shit happens,” said Angelina.
Mariane looked at Angelina who was returning the look. Brad had long since sat back in his chair sipping his cappuccino that was served almost immediately after he ordered it. Brad was out of the equation, at least for this meeting. Angelina’s “shit happens” remark was her way of communicating that this is the way it is, and there is nothing Mariane can do about it. Nevertheless, it almost added to the narcotic effect of the moment to watch Angelina Jolie say “shit happens.”
“Well, OK. I guess,” said Mariane.
“I knew you would understand. And you know we are going to be spending a lot of time together. I have to get to know you. I’ve got to know you to play you,” said Angelina.
Mariane could not help but think that this little meeting had already started to instruct Angelina about Mariane.
“One thing, though, Mariane, and this is very important. You must drop the Jennifer Aniston thing when asked by the media, and you must enthusiastically support the decision of casting me in the movie. If the media starts to give us bad press, then this project will fall apart. That is not a threat, it is just Hollywood for you. It sucks, but money comes and goes so fast, and everyone is skittish about everything. You understand,” said Angelina.
“Yes,” said Mariane.
“I’ve got to go. Brad,” said Angelina as she stood. “You guys talk, fill Mariane in on the timing and everything,” said Angelina to Brad. “It was great meeting you,” said Angelina as she turned and walked out into the hot Los Angeles late afternoon sun.
“You want a drink?” asked Brad Pitt.
Alone with Brad Pitt in the back of a fancy Los Angeles restaurant. This was all set up to seal the deal. The girls came to terms, and now the guy is going to make certain it all proceeds in accordance with the plan. Plan B, that is.

I really think dealing with these two nut cases would really be bad for this lady seeing that all that surrounds angelina and brad is nothing but bad since the day they annouced they were a couple. In my opinion and thats all it is this is just bad look at how mr. and mrs. smith suddenly went bad for them. Try getting real and hopefully a life because these two both need one.

stick with JENNIFER! I dont like the tone of Pitt Jolie ONE BIT!
They do not rule the world… and for some reason they think they can sneak behind peoples back to seal deals because they really do think they rule! Its like you should feel honored or privileged to have them instead of Jen.
I dont trust it and even if they played the roles because they have more acting experience…it would serve you and your husband better if someone like Jennifer were involved.. you wont get screwed! She has a more sincere approach and not necessarily all about the MONEY!
Good luck and God Bless!

It is uppity people like this that we could do without in this world. I think both should go back to Africa and live. Maybe they will be more welcomed over there. Personally, I do not care how much money they have, both have low morals and standards and neither should be taken seriously as human beings.
Mariane, stick with Jennifer. She has a solid history with movie-goers. Angelina is seen as a Hollywood whore, and that is all she will ever be. Let’s hope someone doesn’t break up her happy marriage like she did Brad and Jennifer’s. If they do, she and Brad will certainly get what they deserve!

Brad Pitt nor Angelina Jolie can act, for one thing. I don’t know how they both became so-called “stars”. if it was me, I would run like hell straight to Jennifer Anniston. I’m sure she could get the deal done somewhere else and she would be a lot better in any role. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt both make me sick. As for me, I don’t watch anything they are involved in or with. They are the kind of people that should not be trusted.

GO ANGIE !!!! I think that Angelina will be perfect in the role of Mariane Pearl. At least she has a little more experience with war torn countries & the effects then Jennifer would. My guess is Jen would be more concerned about how her hair looked then the feelings associated with terrorism.
Angelina & Brad are amazing !!! All you folks who bash them are just jealous.
TEAM JOLIE

This situation is certainly one that is not. First of all, to the person that implied Ms. Aniston would be better to play the role than Mrs. Pitt is absurd. Ms. Aniston does not have screen play experience (if it was made for t.v. ok)like Mrs. Pitt.Of course the Pitts are better equipped for this MOVIE. Ms. Aniston is out and Mrs. Pitt is in. Business is business and I do not see how anything was wrong with how the Pitts exercised their rights to make this movie what it needs to be, great. Mrs. Pearl, this is about your family not Ms. Aniston. Goodluck Mr. and Mrs. Pitt and as well Mrs. Pearl. I have faith in this project and the Pitts.

I love reading paradical - everyday, but it amazes me how many people are “involved” in the lives of celebrities as if they really know them.
I wish more people took the state of the world as seriously.

Wait minute isn’t Mariane Pearl mixed with balck and white? Neither one of them should be playing her what about Halle Berry or Thandie Newton?
Comment by Amber — July 31, 2006 @ 10:22 pm
Mariane Pearl is Afro-Cuban/Dutch. Let’s get the facts straight, so why does Hollywood disenfranchise minorities by casting a white woman? I like Angelina Jolie, I think she is a great talent, but being part Cuban myself and knowing Mariane’s background, why can’t a minority play her, and why does it have to be somebody super famous to play her? There are lots of talented minority actresses that should get a role like this, but they don’t. Hollywood doesn’t even give them a chance, what, they don’t believe a Cuban can play a Cuban. Are you kidding me???? This disappoints me to no end, minorities are not appropriately casted, we are meant to play prostitutes and maids, so some other type of role that’s sexually driven. Hollywood has the perfect opportunity to get it right, they should cast Rosario Dawson who is half Cuban herself for Marianne’s story.
Comment by Jen — August 3, 2006 @ 2:35 pm
i think its wrong for angelina to play the part, especially as it was jen who sealed the deal in the first place. angelina just wants to prove to jen she can take everything she wants from jen, be it her husband or her acting jobs. all i can say is karma will get angelina for all the evil she does.

She’s a nasty fished-lip freak ho with a hunched over body, lanky limbs with vains - and weird and psychotic to boot. Then add ugly tatoos. I’ve seen prison tatoos that look better. What’s appealing about her? That she is a slut who will screw you with no morals. she steals men - billy bob was engaged to laura dern - and she doesn’t have a conscience - that is like a psychopath. no wonder her dad begged her to get mental help. she was already committed before. don’t forget the drug use, the lesbian girlfriend she had for years, the blood fascination with all her men, the making out with her brother, knife loving, suicide committing… and that’s just what we know about her!! ahahahahhaaa!! Brad, you are stupid! you got taken you hick from missouri can’t handle hollywood crazy people. SUCKER! you deserve all the problems you have coming because you are shallow and should’ve stayed in a normal thing you had with a sweet normal girl. Dumbass! I guess millions can’t buy you brain cells. go smoke another bowl.

If this really played-out as detailed above, Brad Pitt really is missing “a sensitivity chip,” as Jennifer Anniston once said. How callous and under-handed people can be just stuns me. Shame on you both, Brangelina.

Someone loyal to Jennifer Aniston no doubt, wrote this little piece of fiction. I don’t care what color Angelina or Marianne are, this role belongs to Angelina. Who wants to watch a comedienne play the part of Marianne Pearl? It would be stupid to have Jennifer Aniston play as her character. This film is going to be excellent, and I can’t wait to see it.
Comment by Esra Smith — September 15, 2006 @ 12:41 pm
I like both jennifer and angelina but Jen is better in comedie and angie has more experience with dark roles. Angelina deserves this role. I’m sure she will do a great performance.

I think that there should be a real person to play the part. I would choose someone new in the business, with a good heart, and a true meaning of acting, and not just for the money but someone who could send a message that no matter what the terriorst have or will do we will stand undivided for ever.

Do you think Brad and Jennifer will ever get back together? I thought they were a pretty nice couple.
Comment by mr skin — October 27, 2006 @ 1:52 pm
the person who doesn’t care about what color Angie or Jen are obviously doesn’t care whether or not black (let’s be diplomatic here–actresses of color) ever free themselves from that tacit Hollywood contract that relegates them to roles where they run around screaming that they ‘don’t know nothinn’ bout birthin’ no babies!!!!!’ Black actresses have been turned down for years because it wouldn’t be ‘credible’ to have a black woman in certain roles. Suddenly, credibility no longer matters.
Black women are quasi-invisible in Hollywood, and thisis the ultimate insult.
Comment by coffee2 — November 4, 2006 @ 11:06 am
I agree that someone more ethnic should be playing Mariane.
Angelina Jolie seems to be a nice person, but I think she may be after another Oscar. Rosario Dawson, Halle Berry, or maybe a not so famous (yet) actress would make much more sense.
Jennifer would be very wrong in the role, that for sure. But I still feel she was not treated fairly. As for Angelina, she’s a great person and actress. I’m sure she will be wonderful despite all my reservations.

After just having read ‘A Mighty Heart’, I think Marianne Pearl is one of the most courageous, compassionate and intelligent person I have ever read or heard about. This incident with Jennifer Aniston and Pitt/Joile is atrocious. The Pitts just walked right in and used ‘their power’ and their ‘need to control’ to get themselves involved with the movie. I mean Jennifer Aniston got to ‘know’ Marianne by spending time with her after she approached her on playing her. Jolie did the same, but just the entire tone seems to be an underhanded deal at the hands of someone who has suffered enough - more than enough. She was not even given a chance to decide for herself who she wanted to play her. Pitt/Jolie told her that she ‘had’ to on the spot and they needed her answer right then and there. I think they are disgusting. For awhile I thought their efforts in third world countries was commendable and I still do but not to the degree I did. I see that they are using everything they do for themselves and not for the other person.
Comment by Lisa — December 6, 2006 @ 3:04 pm
I just finished reading “A mighty Heart” and I believe that Marianne needs someone not in that triangle to play her. I believe that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are acting for us every day of their life. How many “pictures” of Angelina do we have to see in Africa around orphans before we know she is a huge phony. Jennifer Anniston, I believe is getting a raw deal but I do think someone else should get the part. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are not good people no matter how many trips to third world countries they take. They lack moralality. I am from Missouri and am ashamed that Brad Pitt is even conected with the state. I’m sad that these two non humans would take advantage of a women that has lost her husband in this way. Shame on them. Hopefully, the movie will still turn out as a tribute to Mariannes husband and Adams father. Hopefully, the two idiots won’t screw it up.
Comment by Sam — December 8, 2006 @ 11:43 am
This is the most asinine thing I think I have ever seen. Why is it that you people think you know enough about someone’s life to call them evil or hate them. They are actors, actors are people. People lie, cheat steal and occasionally take a shit. JUST LIKE YOU. So “he who is without sin cast the first stone”.
Angelina Jolie is a good actor, far better and more convincing than I’m lovably adorable and goofy Jennifer Aniston. The only thing she has done that has been a decent stretch was “The Good Girl” and she was mediocre in that role.
Lastly how many of you have produced a successful and critically acclaimed commercial let alone a film, or have acted somewhere other than many failed auditions, to say that someone is an idiot, or not talented. You Gossip mongers and people who have no lives need to get out and live and stop wasting money on US Weekly.
Comment by Alex — January 23, 2007 @ 11:02 am
First Of all Marianne picked Jennifer Aniston nbot Angelina Jolie, Jolie cant just go up to Marianne and tell her that she is gona do her part, that not right….second of all i think Jennifer Aniston should do this part for the fact that she is more sensitive about things she make a sad movie good…and Angelina is just a tom boy who has only worked in action movie not romantic sad movies.. and third of all i think Marianne should think about this again and choose Aniston as the actress to play her role.
Comment by Stephanie — January 27, 2007 @ 6:30 pm
Even if it is a fictionalized account, it has a ring of truth about it. And as for people not being able to voice an opinion about pitt/jolie, isn’t this supposed to be a free country? Therefore, we can make whatever comments we want about anyone. Whether one agrees with them or not. I don’t know that jolie “stole” pitt from aniston, but she does put of the persona of a truly disturbed person. Running to another country to adopt may be easier, but it does not give one privelage to assume they know about a culture or a people. As for her acting ability, she can act, so can aniston, but I agree that the role should have went to someone of color. Instead of moving forward in hollywierd, the clock is turning back. I can almost gaurantee there will not come a time when a Black actree will play the part of a white woman, real or fictional.

I like both Jen and Angelina but Jen for this part is totaly wrong (blond blue eyed)….I cant’ wait to see the movie. But I wonder; when did Mariane Pearl become a black woman? She is part Dutch, part Black and part Spanish….her son is multi racial, her husband was white.
Why are you guys upset with Angelina? Because she cares about humanity (like the Pearls) and is doing important work to raise awareness?Pleeeeeese…..To all of you who need to make an issue from a non issue, go get a life.

Angelina Jolie - Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are terrified for their son Pax Thein’s safety after learning of a $100 million plot to kidnap him. This is all complete bollocks. Angelina & Mariane have just done an interview together in Glamour magazine this week. They are very close friends, and met even before Angie knew Brad. Brad bought the rights to the movie, and Mariane asked Angie to play her in the movie.
Yes, when Jennifer was connected with Brad she was connected with the movie, but Mariane and Angie’s relationship had nothing to do with the movie or Brad.
Please, get your facts straight before writing this shit. You can read the interview in the May 07 edition of the american Glamour magazine.
Comment by Tasha — May 6, 2007 @ 10:40 am
Though Jolie can with make-up pass for multi-racial, there is no way Aniston should have even considered this role. You will never, ever see a Black woman play the role of someone white, or someone who can pass for white, yet once again people of color evidently don’t count when it comes to money or a situation that could bring honor to that community. Take for instance the movie “World Trade Center”. The marine who refused to give up and was the hero of that real-life tragedy was BLACK! The majority of the world and the black community, who so badly need role models, will never know that a black man could be so heroic because Hollywood for some unexplicable reason placed a white man in that role. When the story is told about the next great white person (man or woman), I dare Hollywood to cast a person of color in that role!

So, what do you people think after watching the movie. I think Angelina Jolie did VERY well. There are a lot of Jolie haters out there, however, she’s done a lot of good in the world than Ms. Aniston. I’m not knocking on Jen, she’s a good actress also, but she was not suitable for this role. Jolie is an UN Ambassador, she’s using her name for a great cause, I don’t see Aniston do anything like that. People get pissed off because she got dumped; so they weren’t compatible, you’ve never heard of people getting divorced????

I just saw the movie “A Mighty Heart” this weekend. I made a search about it in google because I was so intrigued by the movie. This very site was listed as one of the top links. I clicked on the link and started to read what was on this very site and started to say to myself, “Can this be so?” Then I realized this is a fictitious scenario. I read all the comments. Even so, I think all this bashing is a waste of time. All of you are losers and idiots for thinking “Jennifer this” and “Angelina that.” Unless you know any of them on a personal and emotional level, you can’t judge them let alone make comments based on what you read and/or see on TV. No one has the authority to say negative things about anyone!!! For all of you who put Angelia down I say GET A LIFE you jealous bitches! Only if you’re insecure with yourself will you knock another woman down! She KILLED IT in the film and I think she did a tremendous job expressing Mrs. Pearl’s tragedy. Come to think of it I could not see anyone else having played her role except maybe some one like Thandie Newton. I loved the film and I love Brad and Angie together and I love what they are doing with their lives, traveling the world helping others. Much of us aren’t doing the same and whether we are wealthy or not, what they are doing is something necessary and extremely positive! Many other wealthy, famous people aren’t doing a damn thing positive for this world. As for Jennifer, I have no respect for her as an actress as I feel she can not act one bit as even her role in “the Good Girl” was just alright. In fact, never mind, it was awful! I have nothing more to say expect GET A LIFE all you folks from Missouri who hate Brad AND STOP HATIN’ cause you are jealous of others that are more successful, beautiful, smarter, and caring than you!
Comment by Suzy — July 10, 2007 @ 7:10 pm
First, I hope you watched A Mighty Heart and second I hope by now you have realized Marianne and Daniel Pearl are so vastly outside the realms of entertainment media that the very thought of this satirical story involving a tragedy of this proportion happening to someone so courageous and beautiful is utterly sad.
It’s unbelievable to me that we as a nation are so lost in our fantasies that we have lost the means or vocabulary for compassion, or the ability to allow others their personal space for grief and change. I don’t really care who Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt are in their private lives and it is not mine to know. Based on their actions in their public lives, I deeply respect and admire them as human beings. I am glad, of all the sickly self absorbed characters in Hollywood, this project was allowed by Marianne Pearl and Daniel Pearl’s family to come into the hands of these two people and Winterbottom and all the others involved in the project, who all did the best job possible of portraying this story in a way that was important for the world to hear.

as for the movie, i’ve seen it a couple of times now and i think angeline did a wonderful job of portraying mrs. pearl. she gave a good insight into the tragic and horrific story of daniel pearl’s last days. as for the people saying that she shouldn’t play her because she’s not cuban…get real. she was a mix of nationalities and she wasn’t black. have any of you actually seen mariane pearl??? i think angelina jolie looks much more like her than “Halle Berry or Thandie Newton” do.
i also happen to think this fictitious story is disgusting in the first place. it’s totally twisted a true story of a women with courage and strength in order to poke fun at a hollywood couple.

I have just seen the film and Jolie plays the role with so much heart and conviction it is hard to separate her from the true Pearl. In my opinion Mariane and her story were done poetic justice, thanks largely to Jolie’s excellent casting. The idea of Aniston playing such an important role is laughable, sure shes good in comedy, but true acting? Maybe she should find a day job.
