Kate Moss Disciplined Into Unconsciousness - Part One

Kate Moss sat at the end of the king-size bed in a penthouse suite of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel near Hyde Park in London. She was wearing very thin white panties and a white tank top. She was barefoot. She was smoking a cigarette and flicking ashes on the plush rug. It was late in the afternoon, around tea time, and the light was starting to fade from the March sky. By this of time of day, Kate usually had smoked about forty cigarettes on her way to three full packs each day by the time she passed out late at night. People did not realize how hard it is to smoke three packs of cigarettes a day. You have to work at it. And Kate did. But now she had to work at not smoking three packs a day. The burning cigarette limply held between forefinger and middle finger, either hand, was now a fixture, an extension of her body. And the smoke, oh that beautiful smoke going deep into the million sacks of her lungs and then exhaling through her nostrils, was a breathing and pumping organ of her body. She had no memory of what life was like without the cigarette and smoke. But she was trying to cut back. This was only her thirtieth cigarette today. She was going to try to keep the total to about forty, maybe fifty, not the usual sixty. It was work.

Courtney Love sat in the green upholstered chair opposite Kate. Courtney was in jeans that were open at the waste. Her girth necessitated she unbutton the top of her jeans and pull the zipper down a bit. A mirror, about twelve inches square to each side, sat on Courtney’s lap where she was arranging several lines of cocaine with her platinum American Express card.

Kate examined Courtney, who was ten years older than Kate. The thoughts that Kate had been entertaining for the past hour or so, that she had lost control of her life, that she was letting discipline slip, were all diminished by the sloppy mess of a woman sitting in front of her. Indeed, Kate thought, she was a master of discipline. Kate still weighed less than 105. She remained vigilante at eating very little. Maybe she ate crap, but it was very little crap. Better to shove another cigarette in the mouth than food.

Courtney handed the mirror to Kate with a straw. Eight perfectly manicured lines of cocaine formed tracks down the center of the mirror. Kate placed the cigarette in the corner of her mouth, grabbed the mirror with her left hand and the straw with her right and with the finesse of a diamond cutter, she scooped with an inhale all eight lines of the cocaine, rapidly. Courtney’s eyes went wide.

“Hey. Four of those were for me,” said Courtney, as she shoved a handful of French fries in her mouth from the tray of fruit, cookies, sundry much food and six small bottles of champagne that room service had delivered about an hour or so ago.

The cocaine hit Kate hard. She felt it go directly into her forehead, which bulged with a sharp but heavy pain. Her head fell back as she opened her eyes. The ceiling light was blinding, even though set low on a dimmer. Discipline, she thought. She hadn’t eaten a thing today. She had cut back on the cigarettes. Discipline. The rush of euphoria hit. And then she fell back onto the bed, unconscious, the cigarette falling from her hand on to the bedspread.

“Shit,” said Courtney, who popped up and grabbed the cigarette which was threatening to burn the bedspread. Courtney put the cigarette in her mouth and nudged Kate.

“Kate. Kate,” said Courtney. Kate’s unconscious body was so thin, almost nonexistent, that a little push seemed to move all her limps in a jumble.

“Great,” Courtney said to herself. “Now what?”
